Data Platform and Infrastructure Management for a Digital Bank

About Client

The client is an established digital bank based in the United Kingdom catering to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the country.

Background

In the digital banking landscape, effective data management is indispensable. It is integral for factors like strategic decision-making, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction. Digital banks that do not effectively manage their data may struggle to stay competitive in the market, as they may not be able to leverage data insights, analytics, and artificial intelligence to the same extent as their competitors.

Challenges

Our client depended on a third-party technology service provider for their data management. An agreement with the vendor was in place that restricted data access, reducing process transparency. This posed the following challenges:

  • Lack of control over infrastructure resulted in a significant reliance on third-party providers, compromising data security and agility.
  • Hidden service costs led to ineffective budget distribution, restricting the client’s capacity for innovation and growth.
  • Restricted data warehouse access hindered business intelligence and decision-making, impacting market responsiveness and competitive advantage.

To overcome these challenges, the client took the initiative to build an in-house data platform and manage the process related to it.

Solution:

Our team of technical experts understood the technical landscape, process and the challenges. As part of recommendations, the following were proposed:

  • The overarching recommendation was to transition to an in- house data platform to have wider data access, leverage data as an asset, enhance performance, security, and cost efficiency.
  • A secure and robust infrastructure was built on AWS, Snowflake, and Power BI – all within the agreed budget.
  • Data from diverse sources like nCino, Mambu, Google Analytics, and MySQL DB was seamlessly integrated into the unified enterprise data warehouse.
  • Thus an established data warehouse as the singular source of truth was built, prioritizing data availability, security, accuracy and efficiency.

The team is currently integrating FIS (MSSQL) and the latest data sources into the existing data platform to ensure continuous integration with newly acquired data sources.

Outcomes:

A well-designed, scalable, and robust data platform was built, resulting in notable advantages.

  • Unrestricted Data Access: Empowered the client with direct access, fostering quicker decision-making and better control of data  without reliance on third-party providers.
  • Optimized Cost Management: Achieved enhanced cost visibility through infrastructure ownership, enabling precise budgeting and a remarkable 30 percent reduction in costs.
  • Operational Excellence: The Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) streamlined operations by providing direct access to key performance indicators (KPIs) for businesses. It not only acts as a single source of truth, but also provides essential metrics for business, reducing the effort spent on regenerating these logic and enhancing reporting capabilities.
  • Organizational Transparency:  Increased transparency and awareness of organizational processes, promoting accountability and informed decision-making. With data readily available, the client can analyze data, identify patterns, and develop solutions to challenges, leading to breakthroughs and improvements.
